Spring fashion -- straight from the trenches

Tano Handbags in bold new colors for Spring 2008
By Janet Zohorsky

Sure, spring seems a long way off as we shovel yet another couple of inches of that white stuff out of the way. But it will come, as certain as the sun comes up every morning; it will come. How to get a peek at what's soon to be chic

The Worth Collection is on display through Friday at the Batavia home of AnnMarie Fauske. Fauske gives personal attention in outfitting every customer. And along with it, the chance to shed those boots, parkas, gloves and goofy winter ear flaps in exchange for a zippy new trench coat -- one of the hottest spring looks. So get ready for some fun and start thinking about what you can add to spruce up your spring and summer wardrobes.

Bold color
Let's start with color. The spring runways were filled with bold colors such as canary yellow, royal blue, orange, purple and fuschia. AnnMarie Fauske of Batavia, a sales consultant for the Worth Collection, sold through private viewings, says that spring fashion color is high-voltage -- it's all about "color, texture, pow, pow, pow." Worth's collection includes several pieces in an electric blue they call "Blue Mood," including a leather jacket as well as a shimmer jacket. Another color making its debut for Worth is "Popsicle," which is a cross between pink and coral. The collection sports various jackets and a hoodie in this color. And then there's "Lemon Drop." Worth offers a number of jackets and tops in the buttery, warm yellow, perfect to pair with gray, white or navy trousers, skirts and shorts.

Metallic
Metallic fabrics have not disappeared since premiering last season. Instead they have expanded into more expensive and luxurious fabric blends, creating luscious dresses and sharp-looking suits, not to mention the metallic explosion in the accessory market. Purses have metallic accents, shoes are wildly embellished, and belts are glowing on every waist. Fauske believes metallic fabrics will remain popular for at least five years. Worth has a linen jacket and skirt called "Natural Gloss" with an elegant sheen of shimmer in them, as well as other shiny pieces, but which are made from cotton, chiffon and charmeuse.

Trench coat and shirt dress
While metallic fabric is a no-brainer for the trench coat with its glossy shine, the cotton trenchcoat is also huge and a must-have for this spring. Every designer has one -- look for one in any color though, not just khaki. The bold spring colors have also found their way into the trench coat palette.
Taking the trench one step further, you will see shirt dresses this season -- a play on the trench coat, but in lighter, more playful fabrics and belted like a trench. You get that long collar to turn up, buttons to undo, and a waist to show off. Worth has a poplin French shirt dress in a mushroom color, as well as a trench coat in a metallic silver fabric.

Hemlines
For the first time in a while, hemlines are "anything goes." Two years ago, we had long, gypsy-style skirts; last year we got shorter, above-the-knee skirts; and now -- it's wear what you want! Full, sweeping skirts and dresses in exotic prints are super feminine and fun to wear. Shorter, silky halter dresses are in vogue as well. The longer, narrow pencil skirt is still out there, as well as the shorter tulip-flared hemline. A new, drapey, one-shouldered "goddess" dress is an exciting, romantic look. So, no excuses -- shed those trousers! Go for some flirty skirts and dresses.

Prints
Besides the bold, solid colors catching our eye this spring, prints are making a huge impact. Look for something in an African or Middle Eastern print, or a floral design akin to a watercolor painting. Either type is super feminine and fresh.

Belts
Have you noticed all the hints about cinching in that waist? Belts are in, in, in. Fauske says, "if you have nothing else, you must have a patent leather or woven belt in your wardrobe." Wider belts give a bigger impact and put the finishing touch to a sleek suit, shirt dress, or safari jacket. Look for a belt that has something extra going for it -- like a double buckle, jeweled buckle, a metallic-linked belt, or a leather belt adorned with ornamentation or jewels. In other accessories, the wrist should sport a wide bracelet, wooden bangle or cuff-type piece of jewelry. Shoes are still toeless and very high-heeled, but have gone very strappy and architectural. Oversized clutches are big and bold. And satchel handbags are being adorned with scarves. Buy one with grommets around the opening, and thread colorful scarves through, suggests Fauske; change out the scarves to accent different outfits.
